Jose E. Castilla, Sr., 77, of South Bend passed away on Friday May 23rd at Hospice House of St. Joseph County with his loving family at his bedside.

Mr. Castilla was born on August 23, 1936 in Mission, Texas to Donaciano Castilla and Aurelia Partida de Rico.

On April 5, 1956 in California he married the former Mary “Penny” Barrera, who survives.

Jose graduated from Mission High School in 1957 and attended Northrop Aeronautical Institute where he earned his Jet Engine – Mechanics Diploma. He also served in the National Guard. He retired from Bendix Corporation in 1990 where he was a Plant Supervisor and he also owned his own business, Jose’s Aircraft Maintenance Service in Griffith, IN.

Jose is survived by his wife Penny, two daughters; Linda D. (Fred) Avalos of Portage, IN. and Cynthia L. Castilla of South Bend, two sons; Jose E. Castilla, Jr. of Cupertino, CA and John D. (Eulalia) Castilla of Chicago, IL, one sister; Esperanza Rico of Mission, TX, and four grandchildren; Joseph La Fronza, Angela La Fronza, Cameron Castilla, and Austin Castilla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters; Alicia Tanguma and Elisa Alvarez, and one brother; Israel Castilla.

He was a member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church and enjoyed attending several Air Craft Seminars around the United States.

Visitation hours will be Tuesday May 27th from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Hanley and Sons “Southwest” Funeral Home located at 23421 State Road 23 South Bend. Services will be held Wednesday May 28th at 11:00 AM in the funeral home with Chaplin Ed Wilsberg officiating.

The family requests all memorial contributions be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.

I am so sorry for you loss. Yvonne Furman RT, took care of Jose when he was in Mishawaka Hospital years ago. We have found memories of him.May you find strength in the difficult time. Sincerely, Cindy
