James L. Carpenter, 96, of South Bend passed away on Monday, March 14th in his home after an extended illness.

He was born on July 24, 1919 in Reform, AL to the late Oscar and Louella (Adkins) Carpenter.  He has been a resident of the Michiana area since 1947 coming from Walnut Ridge, AR.

On January 31, 1944 in Walnut Ridge, AR he married Muriel “Jackie” Carter who preceded him in death on June 6, 2014.  He was also preceded in death by a daughter Alice Marie Carpenter on November 8, 1946, two sisters, Marjorie White and Christine Bailey and his brothers, Howard, Rudolph, Lawrence, Floyd and William Carpenter.

He is survived by his sister, Estedean Walker of Gordo, AL and several nieces and nephews.

James proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII.  He was the former owner with his wife of Jackie’s Get More Service Station and Jackie’s Grill.  He loved working with his wife in all their businesses.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 19th from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel” located at State Road 23/W. Ireland Road.  Funeral Services will follow at 12:00 PM in the funeral home with Patty Palmer officiating.  Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

The family request memorial contributions be made to Great Lakes Caring Hospice, 2515 Bendix Drive, Suite 100, South Bend, IN 46628.
