Frederic P. Odusch, 83, of North Liberty, passed away on Saturday, August 29th at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, surrounded by his loving family.

Fred was born in South Bend to the late Frederick and Veronica M. (Sabinas) Odusch on February 2, 1937.

On May 16, 1964 in South Bend Fred married Judy A. Dorogi.  Judy survives along with their daughters, Lisa A. (Paul) Hummel and Denise M. (Paul) Schmidt both of South Bend, and five loving grandchildren, Kyle (Emma) Hummel, Ryan Hummel, Adam Hummel, Teegan Schmidt and Emma Schmidt.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dolores Strantz.

Fred graduated from Riley High School in 1955.  He was inducted into the Riley High School Sports Hall of Fame, having played football, basketball, and baseball.  He also attended IU Bloomington and served in the United States Army.

Fred was an officer with the South Bend Police Department and retired as a Detective Sergeant after 42 years of dedicated service.  He was also one of the original founders of the Policemen's Federal Credit Union and served as President for many years.  He was a member of FOP Lodge 36 and St. Jude Catholic Church.

He enjoyed golfing and bowling, loved attending any sporting event his grandchildren participated in, keeping his yard and property in beautiful condition, and traveling.   He and Judy were fortunate to be able to visit and enjoy Hawaii many times.  Fred will be remembered for the love he had for his family, his fun-loving spirit, and his never-ending collection of stories.  He always had a great one to tell and we never heard the same one twice!

Memorial contributions may be made to Pet Refuge, 4626 Burnett Drive, South Bend, IN 46614 or Humane Society of St. Joseph County, 2506 Grape Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545.

Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, September 3rd, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel” located at 23421 State Road 23/West Ireland Road.  A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Friday, September 4th at 11:00 A.M. with Fr. Daryl Rybicki officiating.  Burial will follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance at the visitation and funeral service will require masks and the following of current health guidelines and social distancing.

The HANLEY and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel” handled arrangements and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Odusch family.

Judy and Family - My heart aches for you. What I remember most about Fred was his smile. Such a kind, gentle man. Wonderful husband, father, and I’m sure, grandfather, as well. May he Rest In Peace. You are all in my thoughts.

Dear Judy,
My heart goes out to you at this sad time. I don't know if you remember, but you and Fred double dated with Bob and me and it was so plain to see how much you loved each other. I am so sorry I will not be able to come to the visitation or the funeral (I'm having car issues), but I will be calling you soon and I would like to come and see you in the next few weeks. You and your daughters will be in my thoughts and prayers. As I mentioned in my card, I lost Bob in September, 2018, and I know how tough it is to lose your life partner, especially after so many years. Love always, Carol Hennion

Dear Judy;
Marcia and I want to express our sympathy on Fred’s passing. I haven’t
seen you guy’s in quite a while and I’m sorry we will be unable to attend Fred’s
Viewing & Service. Since my Kidney Transplant I have no Immune System
because of all the drugs I currently take and I can’t take a chance with COVID
lurking to be around groups of people.
Again, we are truly sorry for your loss and will keep you and Fred in our
prayers

Mrs Odusch I was saddened to hear of Fred’s passing. Fred was 3months older then me. I lived on South Scott St. about 3 blocks from Fred’s home on Chapin St. As youngsters in the neighborhood we played many various games at Walker Field. Fred was one of the best athletes in that neighborhood. I went to St Joe and while also playing F B B ball knew of Fred’s exploits at Riley. Though I moved out of South Bend after college I knew Fred was a policeman. I remember my Father telling me one time that Fred was a well known and respected policeman. Please accept my heartfelt condolence.

I was shocked and sad to see Fred has past away. Fred was a good policeman and a really nice man. He always did the right things because it was just how he was. He cared deeply for his family which was apparent very quickly when talking with Fred. My mom always thought Judy was really special and mom was a great judge of character. I'm sure Fred will continue to watch over his family in heaven. We are so sorry for your loss.

Hi Jude,
This is Tammy from MCOB. I’m so sorry to read about Fred’s passing. I remember the stories of your trips to Hawaii and the things at home he would try and tackle after his retirement. He was a gem and he had his pretty lady by his side. God bless and comfort you during this tough time.
Take care - Love always,
Tammy
