Winifred A. Neland, 86, formerly of North Liberty, passed away on Saturday, February 6th after an extended illness, in the company of her family.
Winifred was born in Mishawaka on March 5, 1934 to Frank and Nina (Rensberger) Hartman. On June 27, 1953, she married Robert L. Neland. She retired from the Indiana Employment Office after 28 years as a testing operator. She was a member of the St. Joseph County Homemakers Club. She enjoyed collecting bells, birdwatching, reading, and cooking and baking. Her greatest joy came from being with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Winifred is survived by her loving husband, Robert, along with three daughters, Vicki (Dewayne) Lee of South Bend, Coleen (Jim) Hughes of South Bend, Janine Grimmer of North Liberty; and two sons, Larry (Sharon) Neland of North Liberty and Michael (Julia) Neland of South Bend. She was the proud grandmother of 10, Dawn Lee, Lee Neland, Michelle (Shane) Whitmer, Joshua (Elizabeth) Neland, Alyssa Neland, Stephanie Hughes, Melissa Hughes, Chris (Mary) Grimmer and Keith Grimmer, along with being the great-grandmother of 16 (with one on the way) and great-great grandmother of 2. She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter, Kimberly Hughes, and two brothers, Robert and Russell Hartman.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, February 11th from 4:00 until 8:00pm in the Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel”, 23421 State Road 23, South Bend, and one hour prior to the service. A service will be held at 11:00am Friday, February 12th in the funeral chapel. She will be laid to rest in the Sumption Prairie Cemetery of South Bend at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Winifred’s name to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawka, IN 46545.
