Uncle Carl was a major and positive influence in my life, even though I saw him for, at most, one month a year. He taught me perseverance and self-discipline, that I could complete tasks that I thought too difficult. He taught me the value of hard work, that for anything worth doing, if you really want it, you will find a way, and if you don't, you will find an excuse. His sensible and down-to-earth ways stuck with me through my adolescence and adulthood. When I was stationed in Nebraska, Walkerton was the perfect half-way point between the base and my home town. I wanted my children also to benefit from his wisdom and teachings, so we would stop by for a few weeks during summer. Sometimes, we would be "lucky" enough to stop by during hay-baling season. Uncle Carl would drive the tractor while my children, my cousins and I would heft the bales. As I and my children grew older, I never thought about Uncle Carl growing older - he would always be there, I thought - and my visits became less frequent. Lessons learned from Uncle Carl stick with me to this day, so in a way, he is still with me. He is still with my daughter, as well - she has mentioned having good memories of her time with Uncle Carl. I'm sure he is still with all of us in some way. For that, we can be glad.
