Allan W. Traphagan, 89, of South Bend, passed away on Monday, January 12th at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.
Allan was born in Urbana, Illinois on December 31, 1936, to Woodrow I. and Elsie L. (Hawn) Traphagan. When he was 13 years old the family moved to the Michiana area. After graduating high school, he went on to further his education earning bachelor's and master's degrees from Coast University in California. He was a member of the Ashworth College Association in Georgia. Allan was a hardworking man with many talents, he enjoyed long bicycle rides, he was an artist, a writer and a poet. He was published by Guide Post Magazine and was published multiple times as a poet. He retired in 2011 as a psychiatrist, after many years running his own practice.
Allan is survived by his loving daughter, Ann Marie (Christopher) Traphagan-Schafer-Mendoza of Portage, Indiana, along with two grandchildren, Cody Schilke and Jacob (Monica) Sams and great grandsons, Tate, William, and Colton. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Ronald and Steven.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until service time, in the Hanley and Sons Funeral Home, 23421 S. R. 23, South Bend, IN 46614. A service celebrating Allan’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in the Sumption Prairie Cemetery of South Bend following service.
