Barbara A. (Sobieralski) Wiegand, 82, of South Bend, IN, passed away on March 4, 2023, at her daughter’s home in Carmel, IN after an extended illness.
Barbara was born to the late Stephen Osza and Evelyn (Sobieralski) Hanyzewski on January 24, 1941, in South Bend, IN. She was raised in South Bend by her grandparents, Lottie and Clara (Niezgodski) Sobieralski whom she lived with during her younger years and always cherished her extremely close relationship with them. At the age eight, she went to live with her foster parents, the late Walter and Clarice Buszkiewicz. On October 8, 1966, in Mishawaka, IN, Barbara married the love of her life, George F. Wiegand, Sr., who preceded her in death on March 29, 2003. Barbara is survived by their three children, daughter Jennifer L. (Mat) Greener of Carmel, IN and sons, George F. (Lynne) Wiegand, Jr. of Carmel, IN, and Geoffrey M. Wiegand of South Bend, IN. She was a proud grandma of 6, Michael Greener, Karissa Wiegand, Gabriel Greener, Brock Wiegand, Gretchen Greener and Sarah Greener. Barbara is also survived by her sisters Joan Barrows, Barbara Sossoman, Phillys Meixel, Helen Marie Ankin, and Arlene Hanyzewski. Barbara is preceded in death by sisters Barbara Jean Crane, Mary Jo Irvine, and Jill Yates, and brother John Hanyzewski.
Barbara was a loving homemaker to her children. She was a devoted Catholic who attended St. Matthew Cathedral, was a member of the 100 Club and the Assembler’s Dance Club. Barbara loved taking vacations with her family to Disney World, Epcot, and to Marco Island. She also enjoyed reading a good book, playing cards and games, shopping, dancing and interior decorating. She especially loved spending time with her family and most of all her grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held to honor Barbara’s life on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami St., South Bend, IN, 46613 where friends may visit 1 hour prior to service in the church. Barbara will be laid to rest next to her husband, George, in Southlawn Cemetery.
