On September 16, 2025, Calvin Ray Schafer passed away peacefully in South Bend, IN, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on September 10, 1955, in South Bend, IN, to the late Charles and Dorothy Schafer.
Cal married Debbie Fawley on July 25, 1981, they enjoyed 44 wonderful years of marriage. She survives him along with their daughters: Lisa (Christian) Eickleberry of South Bend, IN, Sharon Schafer of Lakeville, IN, Brian Schafer IN. His pride and joy were his two grandsons Landon Eickleberry and Preston Eickleberry. Cal is also survived by his sister Sue (Tom) Kemble, brother in-law Terry Fawley, sister in-law Vickie Roush and special nephew Brad Keb.
Cal retired from AM General in 2020 after 20 years of service and was a member of the UAW Local 5. Cal was a farmer where he had the privilege of owning his maternal grandparents farm, where he grew corn, soybeans and alfalfa hay. Cal was a volunteer fire fighter for over 50 years with the former Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department that is now Lakeville Fire. Cal enjoyed fishing when the time allowed and being a snow bird in the winter time going to Avon Park, FL to escape from the cold and snow.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2025, in the Hanley & Sons Funeral Home 23421 S. R. 23, South Bend, IN 46614. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions to honor Calvin’s life may be made to the St. Joseph County 4-H Scholarship Program, 5117 S. Ironwood Dr., South Bend, IN 46614.
