Darlene J. (Chamberlain) Flatoff, 82, of South Bend passed into eternal rest on the evening of Friday, July 12, 2024, in her home due to an extended illness.
Darlene was born on June 6, 1942 to the late Lloyd F. and Esther A. (Wedell) Chamberlain in South Bend, where she remained a lifelong resident on her family’s homestead. She met the love of her life, James D. Flatoff. They married on June 28, 1963 in South Bend, sharing 57 wonderful years together until his passing on November 18, 2020.
Darlene was a loving homemaker. She kept herself busy sewing, crocheting, and canning her vegetables. She enjoyed trips looking for antiques that caught her eye. She was a member of ZB Falcons Nest #80. She also loved to go fishing and camping with family and friends. Darlene especially loved being a grandma and spending time with her grandkids.
Darlene is survived by her daughters, Tammy K. Flatoff and Jenny M. Womack both of South Bend, by her grandchildren, Zachary D. Womack and Brittany N. Womack, and by her great grandchild, Salara K. Picking. She is also survived by her sister, Juanita (Jim) Brown of South Bend. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Darrell “Buster” Chamberlain.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, July 18th, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel”, 23421 S. R. 23, South Bend, IN 46614. There will be a funeral service at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 19, 2024, at First Brethren Church of Ardmore, 23370 Ardmore Trail, South Bend, IN 46628, where friends may visit with the family an hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Darlene’s name to: Riley’s Children Hospital, 702 Barnhill Drive, Room 5900, Indianapolis, IN 46202-2189 or Pet Refuge, 4626 Burnett Drive, South Bend, IN 46614 or to her family to help defray final expenses C/O Hanley and Sons Funeral Home.
