David Michael Deakins (Mike) was born on February 20, 1960, and passed away peacefully in his home on February 25, 2025. He lived a life full of passion, dedication, and generosity, leaving a lasting impact on many.
Mike was an associate member of the Marine Corps League in South Bend and a devoted supporter of local law enforcement. He was especially passionate about his work with the South Bend Police Athletic League (PAL) Boxing Program, where he volunteered for many years. He dedicated his time to mentoring and encouraging young athletes, helping them not only with their boxing skills but also in their personal growth. Coach Mike played a key role in securing a home for the program at the Beacon Resource Center and was always there to assist with everything from hand wraps to registration. His warm greetings, quick wit, and infectious smile made everyone feel welcome.
Mike was a man of strong will, yet he also had a quiet and private side. He could be incredibly generous with his time, always offering a listening ear and heartfelt advice. He believed in tough love, but he never withheld kindness from those who needed it most. Whether it was caring for a child, house-sitting, or spoiling kids with Shamrock shakes, he found ways to show up for others in seemingly small, yet very meaningful ways.
Animals had a special connection with Mike, sensing his good heart. His presence would set tails wagging and bring joy to his furry companions. He had a deep love for his dog, Caldo, and never hesitated to look after the pets of family and friends. He loved dogs from a young age and fondly recalled his best childhood companion Josh.
Beyond his dedication to his community, Mike was a vivid and colorful storyteller. He could - and often did - talk for hours about growing up in a military family, the adventures of his youth in West Virginia, and the countless shenanigans he got into with his many siblings. Mike's storytelling was so colorful, in fact, that we can only wonder about the official number of siblings he had. He loved baseball, all things Mickey Mouse, and dreamed of returning to Hawaii one day. He even had a hula girl tattoo. Though he had a humorous disdain for butter, he had a true passion for food—especially if it was free—and he was always willing to ensure leftovers didn't go to waste.
We would be remiss if we did not mention Mike's ornery side. You might even say he was a real pistol. Having encountered many obstacles and challenges throughout his life, Mike was determined, which is a more gentle way of saying stubborn. He seemed to lighten the mood of difficult times by doing things like naming his crutches - Pete and RePete. Mike always encouraged people to be themselves and never change for anyone unless it was for the better.
Mike is survived by his 3 children and was preceded in death by his first wife, Denise, and their unborn child. He is survived by his many loving family members, friends, and all those whose lives he touched through his kindness, humor, and unwavering support.
His memory will live on in the hearts of many.
