Douglas J. Gill, Sr., 74, of Mishawaka, passed away peacefully during the early morning hours of September 22nd, at home in the company of loving family.
Douglas was born in South Bend to Paul and Elizabeth (McAdams) Gill on November 21, 1949. During high school he met and went on to marry the love of his life, Barbara J. Gill, she preceded him in death in 2021. He retired from Kroger, where he was employed as the head meat cutter in their Mishawaka store. Douglas was an avid Notre Dame Football Fan. He enjoyed doing yard work and gardening, loved camping and fishing. Christmas was his favorite Holiday and made sure it was special for everyone. He enjoyed watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel and Western movies. Douglas’ greatest joy was being with his loving family and friends.
Douglas is survived by his loving children, Tonya M. (Chris) Runyan of Osceola, Sherri L. Gill (Shad Chiszar) of South Bend, Douglas J. Gill, Jr. of Bremen, Warren P. (Tina) Gill of South Bend and Justin E. (Michelle) Gill of Mishawaka. He was the proud grandfather of 19 and great-grandfather 15. Douglas is also survived by his brother, Darrel (Sharon) Gill of Osceola.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, September 27th, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Hanley and Sons Funeral Home, 23421 SR 23, South Bend and one hour prior to the service. A funeral service celebrating Douglas’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 28th, with Pastor Aaron Jones officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens of Osceola. Memorial contributions may be made in Douglas’ name to the St. Joseph County Cancer Society.
