Earl proudly served his country in the United States Navy, being in charge of the flight deck, along with being a helicopter mechanic, during the Viet-Nam Conflict. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to the area. On June 19, 1998, he married Geenie L. Prince in South Bend. He served as a reserve officer for the Walkerton Police Dept. Earl enjoyed working on cars and fishing, yet his greatest joy was having cookouts and family gatherings.

Earl is survived by his loving wife, Gennie, along with his children, Tina Klindinst of South Bend and David (Heather) Pickens of Walkerton, 2 stepsons, Nicholas (Amber) Cukrowicz of Mishawaka and Thomas (Debbie) Tidey of South Bend. He was the proud grandfather of 8 and great-grandfather of 4 girls. Earl is also survived by his sister, Wilma (Susie) Emerick and his brother, Gary R. Pickens both of South Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Thomas Pickens, great-granddaughter Joanna Criddle, sister Joyce Marie Pickens, and 2 brothers, Harold R. and Donald L. Pickens.
