Helen M. (Jeffirs) Rudd, 89, of Mishawaka, passed unexpectedly into eternal rest on the morning of Saturday, December 2, 2023, in her home. Helen was born on December 31, 1933, in Plymouth, IN to the late Ralph J. and Irene A. (Kennedy) Jeffirs. On October 31, 1953, she married Tom E. Rudd in Plymouth. They shared 65 years of marriage until his passing on December 19, 2017.
Helen was retired from the CRS Corporation where she had worked many years in sales. She was very involved in her church, and in her younger days was an enthusiastic member of the People of Praise. Helen’s faith was very important to her. She loved Jesus, and He was the inspiration behind all that she did. She also loved people and delighted in time spent with family and friends. Her caring, compassionate attitude and fun-loving spirit made her a favorite of all.
Helen’s younger brother Pat was born with Down Syndrome. Pat brought great joy to his family, and Helen developed a special place in her heart for all Down Syndrome people. While in their early forties, Tom and Helen opened their home to Robbie, a young Down Syndrome boy who needed a family. When Helen’s father passed away shortly after, they welcomed Pat into their home, caring for him for over forty years until his death. Tom and Helen’s love for Pat and Robbie brought them lots of joy and laughter in spite of all of the sacrifices involved.
Helen, being the daughter of a fisherman, developed a passion for life by the water. She spent countless summer days with her children on the shores of Pretty Lake in Plymouth, and then more days with her grandchildren on Lake Michigan. She and Tom bought a small houseboat and, along with Pat and Robbie, cruised Lake Michigan and the St. Joseph River for many years. They also enjoyed entertaining friends and family on the water. Helen passed on her love for life, family, and fun to her family. They all remember her with much affection and will miss her greatly.
Helen is survived by her three daughters, Monica J. (Joe) Higginbotham of Mishawaka, Rebecca S. Roth of West Lafayette, IN, and Kathy M. Rawlins of Mishawaka, and by her son Michael D. (Jill ) Rudd of Columbia City, IN. She was the grandmother of twelve and the great-grandmother of twenty-five. She is also survived by her sister Rosemary Compton of Kalamazoo, MI. Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Marilyn Metzinger, and by her brothers Thomas Jeffirs, Joseph Jeffirs, and Patrick Jeffirs.
There will be a celebration of Helen’s life at 12:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at Coalbush United Methodist Church, 15977 Jackson Road, Mishawaka, IN 46544, with Pastor Larry Chrisman officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service in the church. Helen will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery in Plymouth, IN at a later date. To honor Helen, memorial contributions may be made to Coalbush United Methodist Church.
