James O. Alward, 83, of South Bend passed away in the company of his loving family on Tuesday, September 19th.
James was born in Mishawaka to Howard and Elizabeth (Kushto) Alward. James served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 until 1960. After his service, he returned home and joined the Sheetmetal Workers Union Local 20. After retiring from the union, James opened J & B Electric.
James married Bessie Irene (Kabay) on October 15, 1994, after being together for several years. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and spending quality time with his family, which often included camping trips or boat rides. Together with his son-in-law, Larry, he was often found completing a project in his home or in his garage and loved to impart his construction wisdom on his grandsons.
James is survived by his loving wife, Bessie, along with his children, Cheryl (Larry) Deardurff of South Bend, Kathryn Ingram of London, Kentucky, and stepson Steven Bruster of South Bend. James was the proud grandfather to Shanon, James, Garrett, Josh, David, Andrew, Angelika, Amanda, and Steven, and the great-grandfather to 18. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Patricia and Howard Jr., and his grandson Andrew.
As per James’ wishes, cremation is to take place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Hanley and Sons Funeral Home is assisting the family with James’ final arrangements and wish to extend their deepest sympathy to all of James’ family and friends.
