North Liberty: James E. Close, 80, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2022, at Memorial Hospital with his loving family at his side following an extended illness.
James was born on October 12, 1942, to the late George and Hazel (Rugg) Close in South Bend. On January 4, 1997, he married Sherry L. (Nowak) Close in North Liberty, IN.
Sherry survives along with his stepdaughter, Mindy (Vance) Totten of Victoria, Texas, stepsons, Ryan Burrows of South Bend and Jason Burrows of Mishawaka, step grandchildren, Ariana, Lacee, Austin, Jadin, Maddie Burrows and Cameron Cotton, and his step great-grandchild, Rilynn Burrows. James was proceeded in death by his parents, his son Jimmy Close and brothers Arthur and Barry Close.
He retired from LECO Lab. Equipment Company as a machine instructor in St. Joseph, Michigan for South Bend Lathe after many years of service. James enjoyed working on old cars, watching Norte Dame football games, gardening, working around the house and being with his loving family. Jim was a proud member of the United States Marine Corp then served as a Past Commander of American Legion Post 357 and numerous positions within the post. He was also a member of the Mason Lodge South Bend, Lodge 45 and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
The family would like for memorial contributions to be made in James’s name to the American Legion Post 357, 5414 West Sample Street, South Bend, In, 46619.
The family is following Jim’s wishes to be cremated and kept at his home. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
