James Arthur Grummell, 81, of Lakeville, IN, passed away at 1:05 a.m. on Tuesday July 18, 2023.
Jim was the son of James Arnold Grummell and Mildred Marie (Botts) Grummell. He was born on November 10, 1941 in South Bend, Indiana where he grew up. He graduated from South Bend Central in 1960. He served his country in the United States Army and then joined the South Bend Police Department in 1967.
Jim loved being a policeman for 37 years and helping others. Fall was his favorite season. He would have the Boys and Girls Club and church youth groups out to his farm, in Lakeville, for a hot dog and chips supper, a hayride, a walk through a haunted house, games and hot chocolate. Other policemen would help, and they all had fun.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest son, James Anthony Grummell.
Jim married Rachel (Waston) Darr Grummell on April 27, 1992. She survives, along with his sons, Jeffery Allen Grummell of Lakeville (who was his caretaker) and Robert Arnold Grummell of Mishawaka. Also surviving is his only brother, Larry Grummell of Gulf Breeze, Florida and sister-in-law Karen Grummell, and nephew, Mark Grummell of Colorado. Also, his granddaughter, Michelle Carson of Texas and grandson David Grummell of Noblesville, Indiana. Also surviving are two stepdaughters, Catherine (Tim) Gault of LaPorte, and Christine Darr (Gary Kwiatkowski) of Mishawaka and two stepsons John (Carmille) Darr of Woodruff, SC and James Andrew Darr of Mishawaka. He leaves 11 step-grandchildren, Chelsey, Zach, Chris, Tyler, Joshua, Lindsay, Ian, Allie, Hannah, Rachel, and Emma, also 6 step-greatgrandchildren, Koda, Jeremiah, Richie, Nikolas, Gabriel, Louie, and the whole Watson family.
Jim’s family greatly appreciated all the help from Hospice. Jim’s wishes were to be cremated.
