John Elmer Miller, 92, passed away in his home on Friday, March 11th with his loving family with him following an extended illness.
John was born in Waldo, KY to the late Jake and Sylvania (Wireman) Miller on May 15th, 1929. On August 19th, 1950, in Salyersville, KY, he married Dorsie Rife. Dorsie passed away on May 27, 2011.
John is survived by his daughters: Ruthine (Ferrell) Johnson, Frances (Jerry) Loper both of South Bend and his sons: James (Maxine) Miller of Knox, Johnie (Janet) Miller of South Bend and Donald (Sharon) Miller of Granger, 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters: Geraldine Hanns of Claypool and Shelby Reed of Winamac and brother: Jake (Junior) Miller of Poeria, AZ. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sisters, Edna, Lois, Ruth, Oath Lee, Irene and his brother, Chalmer Miller.
John had resided in the area since 1950 and began working at A.M. General as a welder and retired from there. He loved building various things, carpentry work, being with his loving family and being a pastor for many years at Cross of Deliverance Church, and a member of Church of God.
The family request memorial contribution be made in John’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Drive, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the South Bend Fire Fighters.
Visitation for John will be on Friday, March 18th, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel” located at 23421 State Road 23/West Ireland Road. The funeral will be on Saturday, March 19th, at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home with Paster Thomas Edward officiating. Burial to follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
