Joyce Ann Horvath, 98, of South Bend, passed away peacefully in the company of her loving family on Sunday, February 23rd at Southfield Village of South Bend.
Joyce was born on January 14, 1927, in South Bend, to the late Fred and Bernadette (Gard) Michael. She was a lifelong area resident, who graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in the class of 1944. She met and married the love of her life, Louis A. Horvath on October 27, 1945. He preceded her in death on May 30, 2006. She was retired from the South Bend Toy Company. She enjoyed playing cards, reading, and hitting garage sales to find the next deal. She “loved” Dr. Pepper, and baking Kieflies. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends.
Joyce is survived by her loving daughters, Sharon Wentworth and Bernadette ‘Bonnie’ (Jerry) Dietl both of South Bend. She was the proud grandmother of 6, Ken (Vickie) Dietl, Debbie Tate, Jeff (Michelle) Dietl, Travis (Tara) Horvath, Tara Ann Horvath and Marcie (Jimmy) Woods. Joyce was the great grandmother of 7, Anna Allen, Darin Tate, Jr., Hunter (Tori) Horvath, Parker (Casey) Horvath, Max (Marlena) Horvath, Audree (James) Narkawicz and Trent (Sydney) Woods, and great-great grandma of 7. She is also survived by her sisters, Shirley Hunsberger of South Bend and Jeanie Weaver of Bunnell, Florida.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Richard Horvath, her great grandson, Ryan Horvath, her sisters, Mary Donahue, Betty Stephens, Helen Rajski, and Dorothy Matthys, and by her brothers, Leo Michael, Lloyd Michael, Dale Michael, Maurice Michael, Glenn Michael, and Lawrence Michael.
A memorial service honoring Joyce’s life will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. in the Hanley and Sons Funeral Home, 23421 State Rd. 23, South Bend, IN 46614, with Fr. Ronald Raab officiating. Friends may visit with the family prior to the service from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Sumption Prairie Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Joyce’s name to Center for Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
