Lori Holewczynski Obituary

Lori E. (Gross) Holewczynski, 61, of South Bend, passed away unexpectedly, on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Memorial Hospital after going into cardiac arrest.

Lori was born on February 20, 1962, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, to the late Louis F. and Marye Ellen (Keklak) Gross.  She moved to the area in the 1970s.  On December 23, 2000, in South Bend, she married Ken Holewczynski who survives.

Also surviving are her children, Katie (John) Rogers of Washington, D.C., Trevor (Erin) Miller of Indianapolis, and Andrew (Emma) Rogers of New York, NY, and by her grandchild, Lily Chinoransky.

Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family and friends. She was a romantic, free spirit, and loved music.  She cared deeply for animals, and had a soft spot for strays. She was a formidably talented chef, working for years in restaurant kitchens. She finished her Master’s degree in Social Work at Indiana University in her 40s. An outgoing and magnetic woman, Lori connected with others deeply and solved their problems routinely.

In recent years, she loved her garden, growing poppies and dahlias and lilies of all types; the namesake of her first grandchild. She built a peaceful life with her husband, Ken, who were avid patrons and champions of local music, food, and art.

Her grit, strength of character, and resilient spirit persist within her children. Her legacy lives in the thoughts and words of her close friends and loved ones.

Lori was memorialized on December 9th, at her home and in her tradition. Memorial contributions to honor Lori can be made to the Pet Refuge, Inc., 4626 S. Burnett Dr., South Bend, IN  46614.
