Lowell Hartsell Obituary

Lowell was born in Dowagiac, Michigan to Owen (Bill) and Lula Hartsell. He graduated from Dowagiac High School in 1947. Following high school Lowell worked for Dowagiac Steel and Furnace. In 1950 he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Jean Leitz of Eau Claire. That same year Lowell started work for Kreamo Bakery in South Bend. After living in South Bend for eleven years, Betty and Lowell moved to Walkerton where they purchased and operated Curly's Drive-In while he still worked for Kreamo. In 1970, Lowell started working for Hostess Cake as a supervisor and then sales manager. After retiring in 1985, Lowell worked a few more years for Eckrich and then really retired for good. He and Betty immediately took off for sunny Florida and enjoyed their winter home for more than 30 years.

Lowell loved to golf whenever he could, watch the birds, or just sit and relax watching his Western movies at top volume. Being a member of Bowlers Country Club in South Bend for more than fifteen years was one of his many joys in life. Sitting in the clubhouse talking with all his golfing buddies having a beer and hotdog after his round was pure Heaven. He was preceded in death by his son Steven, daughters-in-laws Robin (Kenneth) and Sandra (Gordon), and his beloved wife Betty of 70 years. Lowell sadly leaves behind four children: Gregory (Kathryn), Kenneth (Peggy), Gordon, and Suzanne (Stephen) Stepkie. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Lowell will be greatly missed. He was a man who knew how to greet each day with infectious joy (Angie).

The family would like memorial contribution to be made in Lowell's name to the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, P.O. Box 1835, Mishawaka, IN 46545.

A viewing will be held on July 5th, 2022, from 11:30 to 1:00 P.M. at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Walkerton Chapel” located at 1216 Roosevelt Road, Walkerton. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 P.M. with Fr. Keeton officiating, in the funeral home.
