March 2, 2022 9:05 AMTo Mary's Family:
Please accept my deepest sympathies; my thoughts and prayers are with you. May your memories of Mary give you comfort and peace.
Whilst attending St. Joe H. S.. during the '57-'58 school year. I was fortunate to come to know Mary a bit. Upon being introduced to her by a mutual classmate, I was immediately struck by her beautiful smile and her radiant warmth.
I did believe that I detected an initial wee bit of shyness; and I understood because at the time, I was pretty much of the same ilk.
We came see each from time to time during lunch, exchanging a few words. Mary always left me with a little brighter outlook for the rest of the day. That year went by - oh, so quickly!
Due to certain familial issues, the following fall found me involuntarily transferred to Adams. A few weeks later, not having made any new friends and wanting something to do, I went alone to the football game at School Field.
Upon filing out after, serendipitiously, for my part anyway, - Mary and I happened to espy each other. Stopping to chat, she told me that she was also alone.. So I asked if I might walk her home, and Mary responded that she'd really like that.
Walking slowly, Mary and I had a great time, catching up each other on our respective lives. Arriving at her house, we chatted a minute or two more, and after seeing that she got in alright, I took my leave - thinking, "I wish the walk had been longer."
Walking home that evening, I could not get over how very much spending that short time with Mary, buoyed me up; my future, being a "newbie" at Adams, seemed to be a little brighter. She had that knack, for sure.
Wistfully, the next day, and for some time after that, I thought of calling Mary, to see if she would be open to an occasional telphone chat - as just a friend.
My own shyness and self-doubts prevented me from ever doing so. I've always regretted that.
May God always bless and keep all of you.
