Mike was born September 5,1945 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to the late Neil and Roberta (Smathers) Dunkelberger.

On July 22,1967, Mike married Suzanne Kobold at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka and the couple made South Bend there home.

After graduating from High School and attending Purdue for two years, he served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.  Upon being honorably discharged from the United States Navy, he was employed with the United States Post Office as a clerk for 36 years.

Mike’s surviving family includes his devoted wife of 54 years, Suzanne; two children, Shellyanne (Brian) Walter, and Scott (Lorrie) Dunkelberger; seven grandchildren, Ashley (Matt), Nicholas, Jessica, Michael, Ryan, Victoria, and Julianna; two great-grandchildren, Kinley and Kohen.  A sister Cheri (Steve) Pierson also survives.

Mike was a member of First English Lutheran Church of Mishawaka where he served as head usher and lector for over 50 years.   His hobbies included playing basketball and softball, collecting vintage toy cars, fishing, and listening to music by the fire pit.  His biggest passion was coaching baseball, softball, and basketball with his beloved children and grandchildren.  He volunteered as a coach and umpire at South East Little League, Clay Jr Baseball Association, and Michiana Basketball Association.  He made a positive impact on the lives of many young men and women, everybody loved “Coach Dunk”.  When not coaching, he enjoyed cheering on the Green Bay Packers, Chicago White Sox, and Purdue Boilermakers.
