Nellena J. “Nellie” Scanlan, 49, of South Bend, passed away unexpectedly during the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 13th in her residence.
Nellie was born in South Bend on December 15, 1976, to Arnold Rai and Florence Ann (Brawley) Livermore. She was a lifelong Michiana resident. On July 29, 2023, she married Joseph W. Scanlan. Nellie was a beacon of light with the personality to have people rally around her. She never had a cross word to say about anyone. She enjoyed music, be it singing karaoke, dancing like no one was watching, or just sitting back listening with family and friends. She loved Pon-Tuesdays (Tuesday cruises on the pontoon boat), and the beach. During the spring she could be found in the woods mushroom hunting, in the fall she celebrated her favorite holiday, Halloween, like no other. She enjoyed gardening and painting yet her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends.
Nellie is survived by her loving husband, Joseph, her daughter, Autumn (Bay) Townsend, and her step-children, Kevin, Kristen and Joshua Scanlan. She was the proud grandmother of Zaine, Amira, Ayden and Pam. Nellie is also survived by her mother, Florence Ann Livermore, and her siblings, Arnold Livermore Jr., Brian Livermore, Cynthia (Billy) Marvin, Karen (Doug) Lambert, Margaret (Jon) Burnau and Orson (Holly) Livermore, all of South Bend, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her father, Arnold Livermore Sr.
A Memorial Service honoring Nellie’s life will be held on Thursday, May 21st at 2:00pm in the Hanley and Sons Funeral Home, 23421 SR 23. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00pm until service time. There will be a Celebration of Life at the Chain-O-Lakes Conservation Club following the service at the funeral home. As per Nellie’s wishes cremation is to take place.
Hanley and Sons Funeral Home is assisting Nellie’s family with arrangements and wish to express deepest sympathy to all of her family and friends.
