Peter Daniel Bates

Peter Daniel Bates, (90), passed away in South Bend, Indiana peacefully in his childhood home on August 9, 2024. He was born March 1st, 1934, in South Bend, Indiana to William McKinley and Helen Mae (Birk) Bates. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his two brothers James Bates, and John Bates and his older sister Ruth (Bates) Holcomb. He was also preceded in death by his first love Kathleen (Harvey) Bates, the mother of his only child, and his second wife Jean Stephanie (Roswalka) Bates. He is survived by his son, Peter D Bates (Jr) of South Bend, and sister Rachel (Bates) Wyant of Nappanee, by his cousins, Maynard Ricker of South Bend, Katherine (Ricker) Connor of Seattle, Washington and Norma (Birk) Williams of Plymouth, Indiana, along with many nephews and nieces.

He served in the United States Army and spent the majority of his adult life living with his second wife Jean, in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Irving, Texas. After the passing of his second wife, he returned to South Bend to live with his son. He was a Dallas Cowboys and Notre Dame football fan. He enjoyed the simple things in life playing miniature golf, a little fishing, playing horseshoes, dominos and spending time at zoos. A gentle and kind man of many talents with an eye for detail. His primary profession was in the printing, die cutting and bindery industry.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 13, 2024, from 5:00 until 8:00 PM, at Hanley & Sons Funeral Home, 23421 State Road 23, South Bend, Indiana 46614 with services on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, 11:00 AM (Eastern), at Hanley & Sons Funeral Home. Pastor Jonathan Kitchens will be officiating. Burial will be immediately after at Southlawn Cemetery, 61430 Old U. S. 31 South, South Bend, Indiana 46614, close by his parents and other family members.
