Robert C. Johnson

Robert C. Johnson, 78, of South Bend, passed away on the evening of Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Robert was born on July 21, 1945, in Quincy, Michigan, to Robert C. and Miriam (Rogers) Johnson.  As a young child Bob moved with his Mother and Father to the Hudson Lake/New Carlisle area, later living in and around the South Bend area. 

Bob proudly served our country in the United States Army and Army Reserve.  He was also active in the Honor Guard and was a member of the American Legion Post 284 and the V.F.W. Post 9820. 

In the early 70's, after leaving the Army, he began his lifelong vocation as a carpenter, becoming a Master Carpenter.  He was a member of the Carpenter's Union local 413. Along with his passion for carpentry he helped construct numerous wheelchair ramps for local veterans.

Bob kept himself busy with many hobbies.  He spent many enjoyable hours on the water fishing. He was a member of the PNA #83 Fisherman's Club earning Fisherman of the Year in 2003. He was also fond of watching and attending NASCAR races and was an avid bowler.  His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and traveling with his loving companion Vicki Burger who survives him.

Bob is survived by his mother, Miriam Johnson of New Carlisle, Jeffery (Mary) Johnson of Hudson Lake, his daughter, Jodi L. Johnson and son Robert (Debbi) Johnson both of South Bend. 

He is also survived by his siblings, William (Chris) Johnson of Rolling Prairie, Raymond (Charmaine) Johnson of Mishawaka, and Nancy (Rich) Shail of New Carlisle. He was preceded in death by his wife Janice J (Michael) Johnson and his father, Robert C. Johnson.

He was the very proud grandpa to Katie Koziel, Chad Brock, Alexandra Brock, Ryan Johnson, Chase Johnson, Bailey Johnson and seven great-grandchildren

The family is following Bob's wishes to be cremated.  There will be a Celebration of Life honoring Bob on Saturday, May 25, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the V.F.W. Post 9820, 4829 W. Linden Ave., South Bend, IN 46619, with Military Honors taking place at 2:30 PM.  Memorial contributions, in honor of Bob can be made to the V.F.W. Post 9820.
