Robert Marlin Tharp, of South Bend, passed away on the morning of Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in his home, at the age of 99.
Robert was born on March 9, 1927, in Angola, Indiana, to the late Fred and Nine (Ritter) Tharp. After High School he went on to serve proudly in the United States Navy during WWII. He served as a Radarman Third Class and was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon his return he attended classes at Trine University. He went on to take a position as a civil engineer with the State Highway Department. He served for over 35 years before his retirement. On December 26, 1970, in South Bend, he married the love of his life, Mary Joan Pfeiffer.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Mary Joan along with their son, James R. Tharp of South Bend. He was the proud grandfather of Sarah. He was preceded in death by his parents and a half-brother Bill Riblett.
As per Robert’s wishes cremation is to take place followed by a private graveside service to be held at Sumption Prairie Cemetery with Military Honors.
