Theresa H. (Golubski) Whitmer

Theresa Helen Whitmer, 91, of North Liberty, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Saturday, March 14.

Theresa was born August 12, 1934, in Crumstown, Indiana, to the late Joseph Golubski and the late Wanda Kulwicki (Pietraszewski).

Theresa met her husband of sixty-seven years, James Elliott Whitmer, while attending Greene Township High School. They both graduated in 1952 and were married April 5, 1953, at Pine Creek Church of the Brethren in North Liberty.

Theresa and Jim farmed their entire lives in the Greene Township area, raising dairy and beef cattle and planting corn, hay, and beans. She enjoyed reading, working on the farm, cheering for Notre Dame, spending winters at their home in Avon Park, Florida, and hunting for garage-sale treasures. She also loved baking treats such as pumpkin pies and cinnamon rolls, but her greatest joy was being “Grandma” and spending time with her grandchildren.

Theresa will be deeply missed by her family and the many friends she made throughout her life.

Theresa is survived by her children William (Pam) of North Liberty, Philip (Christa) of Rochester, IN, Jill (Bob) Shay of Cassopolis, MI, and Timothy (Julie) of North Liberty; her grandchildren: Jason, Kyle, Vanessa, Nathan, Shane, Korey, Misty, Angel, Kacey, Elliott, Roxanne, Zeta, and Violet; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and special friends, Dwayne and Cindy Hershberger. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her son, Thomas; her sister, Clara (Golubski) Sczepczenski; and her brothers, Theodore, Joseph, Norbert, and Leonard.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 19, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home, 23421 State Road 23/West Ireland Road, South Bend, and again Friday, March 20, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m., with burial to follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery.
