Veronica Chalko, 100, of Mishawaka, passed away on the afternoon of Monday, December 15th in the Ernestine Raclin Center for Hospice Care with her loving children by her side.
Veronica was born on August 23, 1925, in San Antonio, Texas to Paul and Julia (Rybinski) Scherner. The family returned to the Chicagoland area. After graduating high school, she married the love of her life Rudy Chalko, on December 20, 1947. They shared 61 loving years together before his passing in 2009. She began her true career with the birth of her children and later her grandchildren. Veronica also became a professional florist. Her love for America was always displayed by her patriotic spirit. Veronica enjoyed reading and learning of American history. Recently having celebrated her 100th birthday with a party, she received over 116 cards. She took an active role as both a Girl and Boy Scout leader. Her heart always had a place for animals, as she loved dogs, cats, and birds. Her greatest role was that of being a wife, mother, and grandma.
Veronica is survived by her loving children, Charlene M. (Tom) Proctor of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Roy A. (Connie) Chalko of South Bend. She was the proud grandmother of 5, Jason (Shengnan) Proctor, Vaughn Proctor, Christopher (Christine) Chalko, Eric (Heather) Chalko and Katherine (Dylan) Mctigue, and the great grandmother of 9, Ivy, Agatha, Rylie, Macie, Josie, Chloe, Evan, Henry and Lucy. Veronica is also survived by her brother, Alfred Scherner of Michigan City, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her siblings, Marcella, Laurice, John, Paul and Norbert.
Per Veronica’s wishes there will be no services scheduled at this time. A party celebrating her amazing life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Veronica’s name to Hospice Foundation, Raclin House, 535 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, Indiana 46545.
