Muriel “Jackie” Carpenter, 91, of South Bend passed away at 2:30 AM on Friday June 6th in her residence after an extended illness with her loving family at her bedside.

She was born on May 2, 1923 in Walnut Ridge, AK to Heenan E. Carter and Helen I. (Rosselett) Carter. and has resided in the South Bend area since 1947, coming from Arkansas.

On January 31, 1944 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, as the former Muriel E. Carter she married James L. Carpenter, who survives.   

Jackie and her husband were owners of Jackie’s Grill on Western Ave. where she retired in 1991. She also was a Real Estate Broker and owned Jackie Carpenter Real Estate Company.        

She is survived by her husband; James, one sister; Eva Lea Barclay of South Bend, three nieces, and six nephews.  

She was preceded in death by one daughter; Alice Maria Carpenter on November 8, 1946, one sister; Nioma C. Thomas, and one brother; Herman Carter.

Jackie was a member of Order of Eastern Star for 50 years. She was a very hard worker and loved cooking and traveling with her husband.

Visitation hours will be held Monday June 9th from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Hanley and Sons “Southwest Chapel” Funeral Home located at 23421 State Road 23 / Ireland Road. Funeral Services will take place Tuesday June 10th at 11:00 AM in the funeral home with Pastor Terry Bucholtz officiating. Burial is to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Osceola, Indiana.  

                        The family requests that all memorial contributions be made to Harbor Light Hospice located at 1608 E. Day Rd. Mishawaka, IN. 46545.
