Lowell E. Sowers, 87, of South Bend went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday November 18th at 10:15 AM at West Bend Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Bend, where he resided the last few months.

He was born on August 11, 1927 in LaPaz, IN to Victor O. and Dollie M. (Holland) Sowers.                       

On July 9, 1948 in Lakeville, IN he married the former Elizabeth (Liz) A. Wise, who survives.

Mr. Sowers was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. You would always find him entertaining the children.

Lowell is survived by his wife Liz, four sons; Terry L. (Amy) Sowers, Alan D. (Connie) Sowers, Timothy W. (Julie) Sowers, and Kevin M. (Patti) Sowers, and one sister; Myrna Hernandez of Van Wert, OH. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; Anne Lawrence, Michael Sowers, Abigail Van Eyck, Ashley Andrews, Emily Blair, Lindsay, Christian, Shaun, and Brett Sowers, and ten great grandchildren; Reece, Benny, Madison, Brielle, Mia, Grace, Bodie, JJ, Owen, and Jase.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers; Marvin, Victor Jr., Everett, and Blaine, and two sisters; Margaret Nicklas and Karen Deveal.

Mr. Sowers served in the Army Air Force from September 1945 – April 1947. He served in Japan for one year. He was a NASCAR fan and loved to work on old cars. He loved the outdoors and his lawn was always immaculate. He retired from I&M Electric Company (AEP) in 1988. He and Liz spent 18 winters in New Port Richey, Florida.

Visitation hours will be held Friday November 21st from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Hanley and Sons “Southwest Chapel” Funeral Home, located at 23421 State Road 23 / West Ireland Road South Bend. Services will be Saturday November 22nd at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Mike Cramer officiating. There will be visitation one hour prior to service. Private Inurnment will take place at a later date.                    

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all memorial contributions be made to the Paper Pantry in care of Grace United Methodist Church, located at 3012 Twykenham Dr. South Bend, IN. 46614 or The Food Bank of Northern Indiana, located at 702 Chapin St. South Bend, IN. 46601.

Liz, Terry & Alan, it's been years but when I saw the obit, I knew it was your husband/dad. So sorry for your loss. I trust life has been a great journey for you.
